Hello. You have made it to Asma Al-Rawi's personal website. Like most personal websites,
this one is full of stuff you probably don't care about. Please take a look around,
check out my research projects, class notes, some of my photography, read my rants or
feelings of general discontent, check out my resume, and leave some feedback when you're
done.
A little bit about me: I'm an American-Iraqi physics nerd, finishing up my bachelors at
Kansas State University. My room is covered in escher posters and optical illusions
and is filled with books. My most prized possessions (apart from my limbs and organs)
are my laptop (IBM X41 tablet) and my camera (Nikon D80). I like to sing and play
guitar and piano, but I oftentimes get more pleasure out of playing than those around me
get from listening. I ran a radio program with my brother at WMBR MIT radio during
Summer 2007, covering the Iraq War from international news sources.
Here's a
cookie for being such a cool person
(unless you're not, in which case, don't click).
I've been playing around with coarse-grain modeling of solvents and peptides.
Unfortunately, classes and grad school applications have overwhelmed me this
semester, so I haven't been doing much research.
here is a short description of the sort of MD simulations I played around
with over the past several months, using CHARMM. That pdf tries to explain
the process of MD simultions, but it needs to be edited.
I need to dig up my notes on the research I did at MIT, but until then, this
section is still incomplete.
My class notes
These notes were all taken on my IBM X41 convertible tablet. Some may include random
doodles, incoherent thoughts, or just random confusion, but for the most part, they're
pretty awesome. These notes were taken in xournal. Feel free to print them out or use
them however you feel; however, if you distribute them, please reference me (not that
they're really good enough to distribute for the most part).
Quantum Mechanics (Prof Uwe Thumm):

Nuclear Physics (Prof Larry Weaver)
Electricity and Magnetism II (Prof Chris Sorensen):

Part IV
Abstract Algebra (Prof Zongzhu Lin)
Below are notes or practice exams that I have made for students that I have tutored in
the past. They are usually in the style of quick reference sheets. I will continue to
add more as I tutor more and find more of my files.

Fuck this noise. I'm now blogging
here.

Turns out preparing for this trip is quite a lot of work. I've been looking for apartments
nonstop, filling out forms for visas, residency, study abroad, etc. At the same
time I'm trying to stay caught up in my classes. My German is improving like crazy just
by attending class and writing essays and whatnot. I am not finishing my homework as
well as I was earlier in the semester. I think I'm beginning to get burnt out. I'm also
trying to figure out how the whole graduate school application thing will work. Flying
back and forth to America all the time is bound to be exhausting and not so good for my
studies and internship over there. I'm also on metformin, which means if I don't stay
well hydrated during my trips I could develop lactic acidosis, which doesn't sound happy
(acidic blood, anybody?).
In other news, I can now play the underwater theme from mario on piano. I'll record myself
when I get up to Boston and post it on here. I should be in Boston for about a month, from
the end of finals week up until I leave for Zurich. ~5:57 PM

I have been lying in bed all day, working on this website (adding content) and thinking
about my future. I haven't decided if leaving is terrifying or wonderful, and am
beginning to think it'll be both. I'll be in Zurich in the spring, if all goes well.
I'm doing an exchange program with the ETH there, and will also be doing an internship
over the summer. This is basically the most excitingly terrifying thing that has
happened to me. I will be living on my own in a different country, where the people speak
a langage I will not comprehend (turns out the German in Zurich is way different than
that in Germany). I hope I live up to my expectations. ~11:54 AM
Yes, I am one of those idiots who put their resumes on their websites. No, I'm not just
a moron. I'm hoping that someone looking at a graduate school application might
visit my website and take a look around.
And here are the things I'm actually proud of:
- I can use hobos in virtually any physics problem you can think of.
- I never lose my socks.
- If I comb my hair over my face I look like Cousin Itt.
- I've got mad DDR skillz.
- I have never played World of Warcraft
- I sometimes protest the futility of protesting.
- I never use Microsoft, unless forced at gunpoint (go open source!).
